What Actually Killed It
The post show story is a case study in how a fun idea can still fail on fundamentals. Prestella improved manufacturing to bring down what had been high margin pricing, and for a stretch the company reported strong sales growth. But three problems compounded on each other.
First, Prestella was juggling active military duty commitments that limited how much time he could put into running the business day to day, which matters a lot for a small operation with one clear leader. Second, cheap knockoff truck bed pool liners flooded the market once the concept proved there was demand, undercutting Pickup Pools on price without the original brand's credibility. Third, and probably most damaging, major retailers stayed reluctant to stock the product at all because of liability concerns around water, trucks, and the ways a pool liner installed in a moving vehicle's bed could go wrong.
That combination, a distracted founder, cheap copycats, and gun shy retailers, is a common way small novelty products die even after a strong TV launch and a real celebrity investor.
