The Last Lid

The Last Lid is a stretchy, water resistant cover that fits over an outdoor garbage can to keep animals out and rain, snow, and wind from getting in or knocking the lid off. Made from durable polyester with a Velcro adjustment for a snug fit, it is meant to replace the rigid lid that always cracks, blows away, or gets dragged off by raccoons. It was created by husband and wife team Kevin and Melissa Kiernan of West Greenwich, Rhode Island.

The Kiernans asked for 40,000 dollars for 20 percent, but they had a tough position: they admitted they had no sales yet and only a patent pending. Several sharks passed, citing the lack of traction. Daymond John saw potential in the simple problem it solved and stepped in, but on demanding terms, offering 40,000 dollars for 60 percent. The couple accepted, trading majority ownership for a shark's backing and expertise.

The pitch was memorable mostly for that lopsided deal. Giving up 60 percent for 40,000 dollars showed how much leverage a single interested shark can have when a product has no sales to prove itself, and it became a frequent talking point about the real cost of getting a deal in the Tank.

After the show, the Kiernans worked to get The Last Lid onto retail and online shelves, and it did reach outlets and marketplaces for a time. But the trash can cover never became the breakout it needed to be, and the founders eventually moved to sell the business rather than keep building it themselves.

By the mid 2010s the company had been sold, and over time the product became hard to find as listings went out of stock and the original website went offline. As of 2026 The Last Lid is no longer an active brand you can reliably buy from. The Kiernans went on to other pursuits, including separate business and real estate work.
