- Sought valuation
Founder Joel Clark stepped onto the carpet in Season 5, Episode 22 in the episode that aired April 4, 2014, bringing their Park City, UT business with them. Kodiak Cakes, the specialty food, pitched in the Food & Drink category, one of 318 food & drink businesses to brave the Tank across all 17 seasons.
The ask was $500,000 for 10% of the company, an implied valuation of $5M.
No deal. Every shark declined, and Kodiak Cakes walked. But a Shark Tank appearance reaches millions of viewers whether or not a check gets written, and plenty of no-deal companies have turned that airtime into lasting businesses.
Season 5 saw 116 pitches, and 60 of them closed a deal on air. In the Food & Drink category overall, roughly 61% of pitches have landed a shark across the show's history.

Everything to know about Kodiak Cakes
Kodiak Cakes makes whole-grain, protein-rich pancake and baking mixes built around a family flapjack recipe. Joel Clark and his brother started selling the mix door to door as kids in Utah, and Joel later relaunched and grew the brand into a packaged-goods company. The pitch centered on a better-for-you take on a breakfast staple, using whole wheat and added protein to set the mixes apart from sugary supermarket alternatives.
Clark and business partner Cameron Smith appeared in Season 5 asking for five hundred thousand dollars for 10 percent, and they brought a roaring animatronic bear to dramatize the brand. Several sharks made offers, but the terms came with demands for large equity or control that Clark was unwilling to accept. He turned the deals down and walked out of the Tank without an investment, a decision the sharks questioned on air.
Kodiak Cakes became one of the most famous no-deal stories in the show's history. By rejecting offers that would have cost him control, Clark kept the upside as the brand exploded across grocery aisles. The episode is now cited as proof that a Shark Tank rejection is not the end, and Clark has said he is glad he held firm.
Where Kodiak Cakes is now
Even without an investment, the television exposure helped accelerate Kodiak Cakes' retail growth. The brand expanded aggressively into mainstream grocery, landing shelf space in major national chains and broadening its lineup to oatmeal, waffles, baking mixes, and snack products. It grew into one of the fastest-rising better-for-you food brands in the country.
In 2021, private equity firm L Catterton acquired a majority stake in Kodiak Cakes, which by then was sold in tens of thousands of retail locations. The brand remains widely available in 2026 across major grocery chains and online, and it continues to operate at large scale under that ownership. It is among the highest-grossing companies ever to appear on Shark Tank.
