iLumi pitched itself as the world's smartest light bulb, and Mark Cuban believed in it enough to write a check on the spot. More than a decade later, the company is still around, but it looks nothing like the brand you saw on the show. Here is the 2026 update.

The Short Answer

The short version is complicated. The company behind iLumi still exists, but it has pivoted hard away from consumer smart bulbs. In 2019 it rebranded as MeshTek Labs and shifted toward business-focused Bluetooth mesh lighting and connected-device technology.

So if you are hoping to buy the original iLumi smart bulb for your living room in 2026, availability is limited and the consumer product line is essentially dormant. The underlying technology company, however, is still active.

The Pitch and the Deal

iLumi appeared in Season 5, Episode 25, out of Plano, Texas. The founders pitched a Bluetooth-controlled LED bulb that could change color, dim, and be programmed from a phone, all without a separate hub.

They asked for $350,000 in exchange for 15 percent of the company. Mark Cuban saw the potential in the connected-home angle and made a deal for $350,000, but at 25 percent equity rather than the 15 percent on offer.

Unlike many televised handshakes, this one actually closed, and Cuban stayed involved as the brand pushed into the smart-home market.

Where It Is Now

Early on, the partnership paid off. By the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show, iLumi had gone from pre-revenue to roughly $2 million in sales, and the bulbs reached major retailers including Best Buy, Home Depot, and Brookstone.

But the consumer smart-bulb space got crowded fast, with giants like Philips Hue and big-box house brands flooding shelves. iLumi responded by leaning into what it did best, Bluetooth mesh networking, and in 2019 it rebranded as MeshTek Labs to chase the larger internet-of-things and B2B lighting market.

Today MeshTek focuses on commercial mesh lighting and connected-device solutions rather than selling individual bulbs to homeowners. Finding the original iLumi consumer product at retail is difficult, and the brand as shoppers once knew it has largely wound down.

The Bottom Line

iLumi is a story of a successful pivot rather than a clean win or an outright failure. Mark Cuban's investment helped the company grow and reach big retailers, but the consumer smart-bulb business eventually gave way to a B2B technology focus under the MeshTek Labs name.

If you remember iLumi as a fun color-changing bulb, that chapter is effectively closed. The company lives on, just in a very different form aimed at businesses rather than living rooms.
