Kwami Kuadey walked into the Tank in Season 1, Episode 4 in the episode that aired August 30, 2009, bringing their Columbia, MD business with them. Gift Card Rescue, the online services, pitched in the Tech & Software category, one of 73 tech & software businesses to brave the Tank across all 17 seasons.
On the carpet, the number was $150,000 for a 30% stake, which valued the company at $500K.
Robert Herjavec and Kevin O'Leary teamed up at $200,000 for 50% equity. That priced the company at $400K, a haircut from the $500K the founders walked in asking for, which is how negotiations in the Tank usually go.
Gift Card Rescue was one of 64 businesses to pitch in Season 1, where 27 deals got done. In the Tech & Software category overall, roughly 56% of pitches have landed a shark across the show's history.
The full story
Everything to know about Gift Card Rescue
Gift Card Rescue was an online marketplace that let people sell unwanted gift cards for cash and buy discounted cards from other brands. The idea solved a familiar frustration, the drawer full of half used or unwanted cards that never get spent. It was founded by Kwami Kuadey, an entrepreneur based in Columbia, Maryland, who built the Columbia operation around buying cards at a discount and reselling them at a markup.
Kuadey came into the Tank during the very first season looking for a partner to fuel growth. The pitch leaned on the secondhand gift card concept, a category most people had never considered. Robert Herjavec and Kevin O'Leary saw the upside in an asset light online model and joined forces, with O'Leary structuring an offer that gave the sharks a controlling stake in exchange for the capital and credibility Kuadey wanted.
What made the segment stand out was the sheer scale of the untapped market. Billions of dollars in gift cards go unredeemed every year, and a platform that turned that dead value into cash struck the sharks as a real business rather than a novelty. The combination of two investors backing one Season 1 founder gave the deal extra weight.
Where Gift Card Rescue is now
The exposure helped, and an Amazon selling relationship pushed volume sharply higher over the next few years. Reporting at the time described revenue climbing into the millions annually as the company scaled its buying and reselling engine.
The growth did not hold. The company expanded faster than its cash flow could support, and complaints piled up from sellers waiting to be paid. In July 2016 a lender won a default judgment that froze the company's accounts, and Gift Card Rescue shut down. Kuadey later moved on to other ventures in branding and business consulting.
Where to buy Gift Card Rescue
Gift Card Rescue no longer operates, so there is no active site or app to use. The original giftcardrescue.com marketplace is gone, and the brand is not available on Amazon or other retailers. If you want to buy or sell unwanted gift cards today, you will need to use one of the other gift card exchange platforms that now serve that niche. There is nothing left of this particular company to purchase from.
